Surveys Flashcards
What is a survey
The recording of qualitative or quantitative biological data using easily repeatable standardised techniques over a restricted period without preconception of the results.
Index
Index means a measurement that is related to the actual total number of animals/plants
Population indices for quadrats/plot/sample unit
Population (n)= total number of individuals per quadrat/sample unit x (area of habitat/area of quadrat)
Population indices for mark-recapture
Population (n)= total number of animals in 1st sample x (total number of animals in 2nd sample / number of marked animals in 2nd sample)
Environmental variable
Rainfall, temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved O2
Biotic variables- species level
Population data, site, nationally, species. Impact of one species on another
Biotic variables-habitat/Ecosystem level
Community change over time
Monitoring programmes should be
Controlled, replicated, randomised
