Story of the lost generation of Israel - an entire generation who died during the 40 years of wilderness wanderings.
Begins with Israel still at Mount Sinai, where they have received the law and constructed the tabernacle.
Begins with a numbering of the people at Mount Sinai.
600,000 men which would be approximately 2.5 million people.
The people are organized and instructed. They then travel to Kadesh Barnea but refused to obey God and enter the promised land.
The entire generation is therefore condemned to die in the wilderness.
The new generation travels to the Jordan River on the edge of the promised land. Here, they are again organized, instructed, and numbered.
The divine command in Exodus is get out! In Leviticus it is get right! In Numbers it is get going! But the last generation said no when God says go!
In spite of Israel’s terrible sin, God’s grace and love shine throughout this book. It is estimated that it would have taken at least 50 railway boxcars of food per day and over 12 million gallons of water per day to provide food and drink for the multitudes. This was faithfully performed for the entire 40 year duration.
