What is important when designing questions for a survey
Flow, keep to objectives, well defined questions, clarity, unambiguous etc
What are the considerations when making a choice about sample size?
What is the budget. What is the analysis to be performed and what sample size needed for that analysis. Trade cost and accuracy, what can be measured.
What is a sample frame
A sample frame is the full set of people you might survey. It should represent the population, gender, similar age, etc…
What is the advantage and disadvantage of snowballing
Advantage: can estimate rare characteristics
Disadvantage: time consuming
What is the advantage and disadvantage of Cluster
Advantage: easy to implement, cost effective
Disadvantage: imprecise, difficult to compute and interpret results
What is the advantage and disadvantage of Quota
Advantage: Sample can be controlled for certain characteristics
Disadvantage: selection bias, no assurance of representativeness
What is the advantage and disadvantage of Systematic
Advantage: can increase representativeness, easier to implement than SRS
Disadvantage: can decrease representativeness depending upon ‘order’ in sample frame
What are the sources of sampling error
Random error, Researcher error, Participant error, Interviewer error, non-response error
How do you reduce non-response
Provide the representatives with incentives if they complete the survey
How can you reduce response errors
Be clear and simple when asking questions, avoiding questions that promote bias
How can you reduce random error
Increase the sample size provides more representatives data, reducing the impact of random fluctuations
