surveillance, GIS and remote sensing Flashcards
what is facial recognition?
facial recognition software reads the geometry of the face from a photo or video to create an unique code of faceprint
how do computerised facial recognition systems work?
recognises patterns in pixels or geometric features
what are the positives and negatives of computerised facial recognitions?
works well in controlled conditions with limited sample
not very effective in the real world where there are infinite sample conditions
what is machine learning
you feed a machine with information and teach it what’s right and wrong
what does GIS stand for?
Geographic Information System
What does GIS do?
computerised system that manages, analysis and maps different types of data, and connects this data to locations on maps
-> applies geogprhac science with tools for understanding and collaboration
digi map
early history of GIS
started in the 1960s driven by the academic community
NCGI formalised research on key geographic info science topics such as spatial analysis
efforts fuelled quantitative revolution in the world of geographic science and laid the groundwork for GIS
first GIS
Roger Tomlinsons pioneering work resulted in the first computerised GIS in 1963
Canadian gov commissioned tomlinson to create a manageable inventory of its natural resources
he created the design for automated computing to store large amounts of data
harvard laboratory
1964 howard fisher created SYMAP
year later created harvard laboratory for computer graphics
many early concepts for GIS and its applications were conceived at the lab
ESRI
1969 Jack Dangermond founded ESRI
applied computing mapping and spatial analysis to help land use planners and land resource managers make informed decisions
helped demonstrate the value of GIS for problem solving
ESRI went on to develop many of the GIS mapping and spatial analysis methods now in use
