Surgical Team Flashcards
Surgeon
-A specialized physician in a area of surgery.
-General surgeons and those who are specialized.
-Decides if a procedure is needed.
OR Booking Clerk
-Works in hospital and makes up the operating slates for each of the surgeons.
-Creates an OR Booking Card.
-Ensure that the operating room is available for the time needed as well as making sure all necessary equipment and OR staff are available.
-Booking card is then reviewed and then forwarded to Pre-Admission Clinic (PAC) so appointments can be made.
Pre-Admission Clerk
-Calls patients booked for surgery and arranges appointments for the patient to see the nurse, the anesthetist if necessary and have all pre op lab and imaging tests done prior to surgery.
Pre-Admission Nurse
-Sees each patient prior to the surgery date.
-Review the surgeons request, obtain a complete history on the patient, covers preop teaching with the patient so they know what to expect both before and after surgery.
Anesthetists
-Used in all aspects of patient care.
-Responsible for preoperative, operative and post operative care.
-Provide sedation and anaesthesia for patients undergoing various procedures both inside and outside operating room.
Surgical Day Care Clerk
-Prepares the surgical charts for patients going to the operating room.
-Ensures that all necessary forms are complete, all test reports are on the chart, and everything is ready for the date of admission (surgery date).
-On date of admission, the clerk orders any lab or radiology tests required for the day of surgery.
Surgical Day Care Nurse
-Greets all patients scheduled to come in for surgery.
-Most Surgical patients come through SDC the day of surgery.
-Overnight patients are admitted to a surgical ward once they are ready to leave PACU.
-Patients not required to spend the night return to surgical day care once they are ready to leave PACU. Day care nurses care for them until they are ready to be discharged.
Operating Room Nurses
-RN specializing in Peri Operative Nursing performs nursing activities in the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post operative phases of the patient’s surgical experience.
-Numerous Roles:
> Interviews patients, ensure their comfort and decreasing any anxiety.
> Gathers supplies needed for the procedure according to the surgeon’s preference card.
>Positioning equipment and any special supplies needed as determined by the nurse’s assessment and patient’s history.
-Scrub Nurse: work directly with the surgeon within the sterile field by passing equipment, sponges, and other items needed.
-Circulating Nurse: work outside sterile field by managing nursing care within the OR by observing the surgical team from a broad perspective and assisting the team in creating and maintaining a safe, comfortable environment.
PACU or PAR Nurse
-A recovery room nurse provides constant care to patients immediately following surgery.
-Take vital signs.
-Ensures that the patient is breathing properly and administers oxygen when needed.
-Pain intervention is another responsibility of a recovery room nurse.
Surgical Unit Nurses
-Both LPN and RN work on the nursing unit.
-Responsible for helping the patient with post op care.
-Managing pain control, patient discharge teaching, assisting patients mobilize, dressing changes and all general care for the post op patient.
Surgical Nursing Unit Clerk
-Process pre op and post op orders.
-Process discharge orders.
-Assist in scheduling of follow up visits with physicians, consultants, treatment personnel and others involved in the patient’s care.
-Continue all other unit clerk duties.
