Includes the time from the decision to have surgery until the patient is transferred to the OR
Preoperative
Pt’s admission to PACU through follow up after discharge.
Postoperative
Inpatient surgery
Patient may be admitted to a hospital unit before surgery, transferred to the OR from the unit, then to PACU, then back to the unit
Outpatient surgery
Patient arrives for surgery, is prepped in pre-op area, goes to OR then to PACU or recovery area, then returns home
Who is in charge until the patient is unconscious?
CRNA/Anesthesiologist
Who is in charge once patient is unconscious?
Surgeon
Who assists the surgeon by hold retractors and counts supplies before/after
Scrub nurse
Who is not sterile and brings supplies?
Circulating nurse
