When do we perform surgical hand antisepsis?
A
Before surgical procedures

What are the steps for surgical hand antisepsis?
A
- wear shoe cover
- wear cap
- wear mask
- prepare medical soap brush, sterile towel, & any other medical equipment needed
- Perform Medical handwashing
- wet the hands and forearm
- keep forearms above elbows
- clean under nails with the nail file, then discard it
- grab a medical soap brush and use the brush to clean nails, 10 strokes for each hand
- Squeeze the soap brush to release the soap/foam
- do each hand alone
- 10 strokes on palm
- 10 strokes on back of hand
- 10 strokes on each side of hand
- 10 strokes for each side of each finger (4)
- separate arm into 3 sections
- 10 strokes for each side of wrists (4)
- 10 strokes for each side of the forearms (4)
- last section is 5 cm above elbow, also 10 strokes on each side
- never go back to an area you finished
- rinse from the fingertips to above the elbows slowly in one direction. Don’t go back & forth, only one stroke, & if needed repeat. Don’t touch anything while rinsing, or you will have to repeat the whole process
- with the forearms above the elbows, ensure your arms don’t touch your scrubs, keep them far.
- dry hands with sterile towel
- dry from the fingertips down to elbows in circular motion without going back
- use diff side of towel for other hand
- wear gown by grabbing it from the inside ONLY
- wear eyewear / goggles
- wear gloves without touching the outside of the gloves

What are the steps in Donning and Removing Sterile gloves?
A
- Performs medical handwashing
- obtains package of appropriate sized gloves
- clears a workspace that allows opening of package without contact with other articles
- opens outer layer of wrapped gloves
- unfolds inner wrappers without touching gloves
- positions package, so cuffs are easily accessible
- Picks up dominant hand glove with the non-dominant hand using index finger & thumb at the folded edge of glove
- ensure adequate space away from area while applying gloves
- applies gloves with the fingers downwards
- Use gloved fingers, only touching the sterile side, to wear the other glove
- don’t touch anything that isn’t the sterile gloves
- you can adjust the gloves using the gloved hands to remove wrinkles
To Remove : - stretch glove from inner palm and pull it off so it is inside out
- with the glove in the gloved hand, use your fingers by inserting them below the cuff, without touching the surface of the glove because it’s unsterile, and stretch it over the other glove in your hand.
- dispose of gloves
- wash hands thoroughly

- pads soiled with visible blood, urinals & bedpans
- disposable instruments
- medication & soiled treatment items
- surgical wastes

How do we dispose of infectious waste?
A
- wear clean gloves
- use the proper containers
- leakproof plastic bags
- sharps container
- ensure everything is properly labelled
- be careful when handling plastic bags to prevent punctures & breakage
- disinfect carts used to discard waste
- wash hands afterward
