- Linting
- stain
What do you wear whenever you expect to come in contact with blood, body fluids or other potentially infectious material?

T OR F?

T!
Why do we prefer lint free materials in the O.R?
Lint carries bacteria
The primary source of bacteria dispersed into the air in the O.R or procedure comes from where?
PEOPLE! health care provider’s skin
*Abt 10,000 squames (shedded skin cells) per day
in order to avoid letting skin squames escape the axilla and chest and disperse to the environment, what do we do to the scrub tops?
tuck them in and fit them closely to our bodies
When in the restricted section of the O.R what must be done with the arms?
cover them completely with a warm up jacket
when doing preop patient skin antisepsis, what must we make sure we do with our arms?
cover them completely because we don’t want any of our squames to fall on the prepped area.
Do we need to cover our arms when handling sterile material?
yes because we don’t want our squames to end up on them.
So, if a pathologist, law enforcement officer, parent, biomedical engineer needs to step into the semi-restricted or restricted area, what should you tell them?
they have to wear a bunny suit or single used jumpsuit or scrub attire.
T OR F?
You leave the O.R to run to the store really quickly. It’s ok to go to the store with the O.R scrubs on.
F!
HCP cannot go outside with OR scrubs on because it exposes it to bacteria. If that does happen, the HCP needs a new pair of scrubs because we don’t want to introduce it to the patients or the O.R environment.
If you wear a cover apparel (lab coat) over your O.R scrubs, or a personal surgical cap, what are the requirements?
they have to be washed daily in a health-care accredited laundry facility.
Should stethoscope be worn around the neck for easy access?
NOPE!
they should also be cleaned with a low level disinfectant before and after each use
How should you take off shoe covers?
with gloves and then wash your hands
T OR F?
Masks with ear loops are perfect for the O.R
F!
They are not intended for use in surgery because they may not provide a secure facial fit that prevents venting at the sides of the mask.
Do we need new face mask, goggles, and shoe covers with each need case?
yes! and wash your hands
Why should we not let surgical masks hang around our necks?
the contaminated mask may cross-contaminate our scrubs.
How should the surgical mask be removed and discarded?
remove it by handling only the ties and wash your hands after.
this prevents contamination of the hands
When it comes to the ID badges, it should be visible and cleaned, but why can’t we have it secured on a lanyard?
they harbor a lot of bacteria
*clean badges with 70% isopropyl alcohol
why can’t we use a fabric stethoscope tubing cover?
they harbor bacteria and act as fomites for pathogens
briefcases, backpacks, and other personal items that are taken into the semi-restricted area must be ? first.
cleaned with a low-level disinfectant and should not be placed on the floor.
same for tablets and hand-held electronic devices
when should personnel remove head covering?
when they change into street clothes and go outside of the building.
