What conditions would IV fluid therapy be required for?
A
Fluid Resuscitation
- e.g. if someone has lost a large amount of blood and is hypovolemic
Nil by mouth patients
Stoma
Lots of burns
- Lost out layer of skin to keep in water
Provide IV fluid only for patients whose needs cannot be met by oral or enteral routes and should be stopped as soon as possible.

List the symptoms of dehydration
A
Thirst
Dark coloured urine
Dizziness, light-headedness Headache Tiredness Dry mouth, lips and eyes Passing small amounts of urine infrequently

What are common clinical signs of dehydration?
A
Prolonged capillary refill time
Decrease in skin turgor (slow or tenting)
Increased heart rate Increase respiratory rate Decreased blood pressure Reduced consciousness Dry mucous membranes Reduced tears Faint pulse Decreased urine output
