How are waves formed?
Waves are formed when waves cause friction of the surface of the after, thus creating swells.
Type of wave suitable for surfing?

How do you measure the height of a wave?
Measures from the trough to the lip
How to attract lifeguard attention ?
Wave arm back and forth above head.
Either clench or unclench fist.
What is the Stringer?
It is the timber strip which runs down the centre of a fibre glass board. It provides strength to the board .
Why should you learn on a long board?
Because they have less responsibility and they are more stable for riding, paddling and standing on.
Why is wax applied to board?
Wax is applied to boards to stop surfers from slipping when paddling and standing.
How should you apply wax?
In a circular motion
3 different types of wetsuit?
Full/Steamer (Long arms and legs)
Spring (Short arms and legs)
Short John (No arms or legs)

Where do you not surf?
In areas where there are signs asking for no surfers!
What is an Eskimo Roll?
Technique used to get under large waves.
Grip rails and roll so you are underneath the board. Let the wave roll over you then flip back on top of the board.
Eskimo roll about 1 metre before approaching wave!
What is the correct paddling technique?
Stretch one arm out whilst pulling the other back
Keep arms close to board
Arch back slightly
Correct laying on board technique?
Feet should be dangling over the bottom of board
Lay in the middle
Keep legs together to make you streamline and balanced
How to wipe out safely?
Roll off the side (still laying down)
Fall off the side in a starfish position (if standing)
What does being Natural or Goofy footed mean?
Natural - Left foot
Goofy - Right foot
Correct standing technique?
Foot with lead should be positioned over fins, free foot should be in middle of board.
Standing near the back
Bend knees
Hold arms out for balance
3 common mistakes of beginners?
Standing before balance is found, or they bend their knees excessively
Standing too much to one side of the board
Throw themselves off to one side because of loss of balance
How to catch a wave?
Turn board and start paddling when wave is about 4 metres away.
Do the push up (technique).
Jump to feet when you feel the wave beneath you.
What is trimming?
Trimming is riding across the wave
How to turn?
Moves arms and upper body to , called shifting
Lean body and look in the desired direction
What is Dropping In?
When ones surfer drops in on another surfers wave. Wave on the inside of the wave gets to take the wave.
What is snaking?
When another surfer paddles in to the inside of the age and takes it form the original surfer.
Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion?
Warm, pink skin Sweating Vomiting Cramps Confusion or headaches
Symptom of heat stroke?
How, pale and dry skin No sweating Sudden collapse Aggressiveness Restlessness or having a fit
What should you do if you have these symptoms?
Get into shade
Drink lots of water
Cool yourself
Why do surfers get hypothermia?
Because of the cold water and wind.
How to identify a rip?
Churned up sand
Clean channels
No waves
Rippled water

Never go into water you are unsure of
