Surficial Hell Flashcards
Surficial Geology
Study of geologic deposits at and near the Earth’s surface, involves study of landforms that makeup the landscape at the surface
Surficial deposits often represent the most recent of
geologic units, typically include from most general to more specific
Unconsolidated Sediments
loose sediment that forms sand and gravel deposits
Alluvium
unconsolidated clastic material deposited by a stream or other body of running water
Soils
Result of surface weathering of underlying deposits or rocks
Bedrock
Solid rock that underlies soils or other unconsolidated superficial material, common in areas that have undergone intense erosion and/or where soil cover is very thin or absent
Surficial deposits reflect the most recent erosional…
and/or depositional processes
Drumlin field
Elongate hills of typical shape, built and/or craved-out under the ice of a glacier
Eskers
Meltwater rivers that originate underneath glaciers, and over time the tunnel fills up with sediment
Braided Stream Characteristics
Steeper slopes, higher velocities, transport larger grains than meandering stream
Meandering Stream Characteristics
Gentle slope, consistent velocity, fine-grained transport
Point bar
On inside bend of streams, area of deposition, associated with finer grains
Cut bank
Area of erosion caused by thalweg, associated with coarses grains
