Surfaces of the cerebrum Flashcards
How much does the brain weigh?
1.5 Kilograms
What are the main parts of the brain?
- Cerebrum
- Right and left hemispheres
- Cerebellum
- Brainstem
What separates the two hemispheres?
The longitudinal fissure
What are the three meninges that cover the brain?
- Dura Mater
- Arachnoid
- Pia Mater
What are the characteristics of the dura mater?
- The hardest meninx out of the three.
- Most external meninx.
What is the Flax cerebri?
A piece of dura that continues into the longitudinal fissure.
When we remove the brain, what happens to the dura?
Most of the dura remains attached to the skull.
Bluish/mostly see-through meninx is called
Arachnoid mater (spider-web)
What are gyri?
The folds of the cerebral cortex
What are the sulci?
The grooves of the cerebral cortex.
What are the characteristics of the pia mater?
- It is the innermost mater.
- It is the thinnest.
- It cannot be seen in the brain as clearly as in the spinal cord.
- Closely follows the cerebral cortex.
Does the Arachnoid go into the gyri and sulci?
No, it is the only mater that superficially covers the brain.
What is in the subarachnoid space?
CSF, cerebrospinal fluid.
What is a cistern?
It is a reservoir where there is more CSF due to the arachnoid passing over a gap between structures.
Name the 5 cisterns in the brain.
- Cerebromedullary cistern (cisterna magna).
- Pontine cistern.
- Interpeduncular cistern.
- Superior cistern.
- Lateral fissure cistern.
A characteristic of the sulci
There are three main sulci which divide the brain into 4 main lobes.
What are the names of the three main dividing sulci?
- Lateral fissure (lateral sulcus)
- The central sulcus.
- Parieto-occipital sulcus.
Where is the frontal lobe regarding the central sulcus?
Anterior to the central sulcus.
Where is the temporal lobe in comparison to the lateral fissure?
Below it, inferior.
Where is the parietal lobe?
Between the parieto-occiptal sulcus and the central sulcus.
Where is the occipital lobe?
Posterior to the parieto-occipital sulcus and the pre-occipital notch.
Is the frontal lobe divided? If so, how many?
Yes, to four gyri.
Precentral gyrus
- Contains the primary motor are.
- It is anterior to the central sulcus.
Which regions do the inferior and superior frontal sulci separate?
- Superior frontal gyrus.
- Inferior frontal gyrus.
- Middle frontal gyrus.
The inferior frontal gyrus is further divided into three parts, name them.
- Pars orbitalis
- Pars triangularis.
- Pars opercularis.
What is shared between the anterior ramus and the ascending ramus?
They are both branches of the lateral fissure.
