Surface Treatments and Finishes Flashcards
What are some reasons why finishes are added to product’s surfaces?
Stop corrosion, prevent decay and UV light degradation, to insulate a product or make it stronger, to add colour or decoration
What are some finishes that can be applied to papers and boards?
Printing, waterproof coating, and laminating
What are some finishes that can be applied to timber and wood?
Painting, varnish, wax and stain, and preservative
What are some finishes that can be applied to metals?
Powder or dip coating, galvanising (coating iron or steel with zinc), and electroplating (coating with a thin layer by electrolysis)
What are some finishes that can be applied to Polymers?
Polish, vinyl decals, and printing
What are some finishes that can be applied to electronics?
Protective insulation, lacquering, and lubrication
Why is surface preparation vital before applying a finish?
Removing dust, grease and rust will make sure that there is a smooth surface for the finish to adhere to. Some surfaces may require better grip, so will need something that is easier to bond to, so the surface might be left rough.
How can surface finishes be applied?
Painting, rolling and spraying, electroplating and sandblasting, heat or pressure bonding, adhesives, and printing
