Surface physics Flashcards
How quick is ML produced in high vacuum?
3s
How quick is ML produced in UHV?
8 hours
Surface SPECIFIC vs Surface SENSITIVE?
Surface sensitive - surface effects can be measured
Surface specific - ONLY surface effects can be measured
Differences in X-rays, neutrons and (electrons, ions)?
X-rays and neutrons are weakly interactive and penetrative. Not particularly good for surfaces
Electrons and ions – strongly interactive with matter – not penetrative – good probe for surfaces
Applications of TF vs coating
TF:
Modern display technology
Magnetic data storage
Semiconductor devices
Metallic electrodes
Coating:
Hard coatings
Electrically conductive coatings
Architectural coatings
Optical coatings
Gas permeability battiers
Gas vs Vapour
Gas:
Requires cooling to condense
T > critical temperature
Mostly exists on its own
Vapour:
Can be condensed by compression alone
T < critical temperature
Vapour coexists with the condensed phase
Ideal gas law?
PV = NkT
P = nKT — n = N/V
