بِئْسَمَا ٱشْتَرَوْا۟ بِهِۦٓ أَنفُسَهُمْ أَن يَكْفُرُوا۟ بِمَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بَغْيًا أَن يُنَزِّلَ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِۦ ۖ فَبَآءُو بِغَضَبٍ عَلَىٰ غَضَبٍۢ ۚ وَلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ عَذَابٌۭ مُّهِينٌۭ ٩٠
Vile, it the one who sold themseleves and that denies that Allah revealed, Jealous of that Allah revealed from his blessings upon whoever he wills from his servants. So they came with Wrath upon wrath. And for the disbelievers there is a painful punishment.
Commentary:
They were jealous because they believed that the final messenger was going to be from their tribe but because he wasn’t they rejected him.
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِمَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ قَالُوا۟ نُؤْمِنُ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَيْنَا وَيَكْفُرُونَ بِمَا وَرَآءَهُۥ وَهُوَ ٱلْحَقُّ مُصَدِّقًۭا لِّمَا مَعَهُمْ ۗ قُلْ فَلِمَ تَقْتُلُونَ أَنۢبِيَآءَ ٱللَّهِ مِن قَبْلُ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ ٩١
And when it is said to them to believe in what Allah revealed they say we believe in what was revealed to us and deny what came after it. That is the truth which confirms for what from them. Say why are you killing the prophets of Allah from before if you are believers.
Commentary:
The isrealites didn’t believe in what was sent down to them and they slayed the prophets even though they were from their own tribes.
قُلْ مَن كَانَ عَدُوًّۭا لِّجِبْرِيلَ فَإِنَّهُۥ نَزَّلَهُۥ عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ مُصَدِّقًۭا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَهُدًۭى وَبُشْرَىٰ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ٩٧
Say if someone is an enemy to Jibreail, it is he who bought upon your hearts by the permission of Allaj confirming what has been before. A guidance and good tidings to the believers.
وَلَمَّا جَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌۭ مِّنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ مُصَدِّقٌۭ لِّمَا مَعَهُمْ نَبَذَ فَرِيقٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ كِتَـٰبَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَآءَ ظُهُورِهِمْ كَأَنَّهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ١٠١
When the messengers came to them from Allah confirming what was with them. Some of them from the people of the book threw the book of Allah behind their backs as if they did not know.
Commentary:
This isn’t literal but they denied the books due to their ignorance and they wanted their book to be right. Even though the prophets came down to confirm.
وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ مَا تَتْلُوا۟ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينُ عَلَىٰ مُلْكِ سُلَيْمَـٰنَ ۖ وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَيْمَـٰنُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُعَلِّمُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ ٱلسِّحْرَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ عَلَى ٱلْمَلَكَيْنِ بِبَابِلَ هَـٰرُوتَ وَمَـٰرُوتَ ۚ وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ حَتَّىٰ يَقُولَآ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ فِتْنَةٌۭ فَلَا تَكْفُرْ ۖ فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مِنْهُمَا مَا يُفَرِّقُونَ بِهِۦ بَيْنَ ٱلْمَرْءِ وَزَوْجِهِۦ ۚ وَمَا هُم بِضَآرِّينَ بِهِۦ مِنْ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مَا يَضُرُّهُمْ وَلَا يَنفَعُهُمْ ۚ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمُوا۟ لَمَنِ ٱشْتَرَىٰهُ مَا لَهُۥ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلَـٰقٍۢ ۚ وَلَبِئْسَ مَا شَرَوْا۟ بِهِۦٓ أَنفُسَهُمْ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْلَمُونَ ١٠٢
They followed what the devil recited in the kingdom of Sulaiman , and it was not who Sulaiman who denied but the devils who disbelieved and taught the people magic. and what was sent upon the 2 angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut and they did not teach anyone without first having said that this was only a trial so do not deny. So they used to learn from them that which would separate a man from his wife. but they would not harm anyone without the will of Allah. They used to learn what was harmful and did not benefit them. Verily they knew whoever finds the wrong path they will have no share in the hereafter. And vile for what they sold themselves away, if only they knew,
Commentary:
The jews used to indulge in sorcery and black magic, which was prohibited by Allah. This was done by some of the devils in the days of Sulaiman. “What the devils used to recite” Recite formulas for the magic .
To justify what they were doing they said that Suliman used to practice magic.
The formulas used for magic would lead to infidelity so magic here is referred to as Kufr.
The verse does against the jews belief that Sulaiman became an apostate at the end of his life and an idol worshipper which is what the old testament of the bible says but the Quran goes against it.
Origins of Black magic:
Black magic became very popular in Babylon. People started confusing it with miracles of the prophet. To clear the misconception Allah sent down 2 angels - Harut and Marut in human form.
Explained the difference:
- Miracles: Unusual events beyond the ordinary shown directly by Allah to provide the truth of the Prophets
- Magic : Events that have no connection to piety of those who practice it.
They warned them hat if they chose to disobey they would lose their whole hereafter but so many still sold themselves.
وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّن مَّنَعَ مَسَـٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ أَن يُذْكَرَ فِيهَا ٱسْمُهُۥ وَسَعَىٰ فِى خَرَابِهَآ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ مَا كَانَ لَهُمْ أَن يَدْخُلُوهَآ إِلَّا خَآئِفِينَ ۚ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا خِزْىٌۭ وَلَهُمْ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌۭ ١١٤
whoever is unjust from those who stop Allahs name being recited in the mosques of Allah and strives in their ruins. For those if it was not to enter except with fear. For them in this world is disgrace and for them in the hereafter there is a painful punishment.
Commentary:
There are 3 things that were stopped from worship:
1. Change in direction of Qiblah and offering Salah
2. Invaided Jerusalen and Destroyed Bait Ul Maqdis
3. They prevented the prophet SAWS from entering the hold mosque in Makkah
Difference between Pagan and People of the book
- The pagans believed in Idols and Rejected everything
- The people of the book were people who believed in a book that was changed.
وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْمَشْرِقُ وَٱلْمَغْرِبُ ۚ فَأَيْنَمَا تُوَلُّوا۟ فَثَمَّ وَجْهُ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وَٰسِعٌ عَلِيمٌۭ ١١٥
To Allah belong the east and the west, so wherever you turn you are facing ˹towards˺ Allah.1 Surely Allah is All-Encompassing,2 All-Knowing.
Doesnt matter where you turn Allah is everywhere so just because a direction is fixed towards the Qiblah doesn’t mean he is only in that direction but is everywhere.
the direction of Qiblah was changed due to the Prophet SAWS and his sahabas felt a deep longing for turning towards the Kabah. After 16 months, the qiblah was changed, and they were faced directly towards the Kabah.
وَقَالُوا۟ ٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ وَلَدًۭا ۗ سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ ۖ بَل لَّهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ كُلٌّۭ لَّهُۥ قَـٰنِتُونَ ١١٦
They1 say, “Allah has offspring.”2 Glory be to Him! In fact, to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth—all are subject to His Will.
بَدِيعُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ وَإِذَا قَضَىٰٓ أَمْرًۭا فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ ١١٧
˹He is˺ the Originator of the heavens and the earth! When He decrees a matter, He simply tells it, “Be!” And it is!
۞ وَإِذِ ٱبْتَلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ رَبُّهُۥ بِكَلِمَـٰتٍۢ فَأَتَمَّهُنَّ ۖ قَالَ إِنِّى جَاعِلُكَ لِلنَّاسِ إِمَامًۭا ۖ قَالَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِى ۖ قَالَ لَا يَنَالُ عَهْدِى ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ ١٢٤
and when Your lord tested Ibrahim with certain words and he fulfilled them. He said I will bring to you for the people an imam. So he said “ from my progeny” he said “the promise does not extend to the unjust”
وَإِذْ جَعَلْنَا ٱلْبَيْتَ مَثَابَةًۭ لِّلنَّاسِ وَأَمْنًۭا وَٱتَّخِذُوا۟ مِن مَّقَامِ إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ مُصَلًّۭى ۖ وَعَهِدْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ أَن طَهِّرَا بَيْتِىَ لِلطَّآئِفِينَ وَٱلْعَـٰكِفِينَ وَٱلرُّكَّعِ ٱلسُّجُودِ ١٢٥
And when we made the house a frequented place for men and a peace, make from the station of Ibrahim a place of prayer. We gave to Ibrahim and ismail: Purify my house for those who make Tawaf and those who stay in Itikaf and pow down and prostate.
Tawaf is a form of worship and when people circulate the Kabah 7 times, Itikaf is when someone secluded themselves from everyone for ibadah.
صِبْغَةَ ٱللَّهِ ۖ وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ صِبْغَةًۭ ۖ وَنَحْنُ لَهُۥ عَـٰبِدُونَ ١٣٨
The colouring of Allah! for who is better in the colouring of Allah? We are to worship none but him.
صِبْغَةَ means colouring
According to christians this phrase alludes to their ritual of Baptisum.
- Purification, washing a baby in coloured water to wash their sins
Pure Iman - Colour in Islam is faith that will shine through a believers save, movements and behaviours.
- Dying Youseleves on the colour of Allah means to completely submit yourself to Allah
104 يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَقُولُوا۟ رَٰعِنَا وَقُولُوا۟ ٱنظُرْنَا وَٱسْمَعُوا۟ ۗ وَلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۭ
O believers! Do not say, “Râ’ina.” [Herd us!] But say, “Unẓurna,” [Tend to us!] and listen ˹attentively˺.1 And the disbelievers will suffer a painful punishment.
Commentary:
The word Raina in Arabic means “Take care of use” and the Jews referred to the Prophet saws as this but in Hebrew the word meant a cursed word. “Sheperd” but this had negative connotation on it. This is why the word was changed to Unzura”
106 ۞ مَا نَنسَخْ مِنْ ءَايَةٍ أَوْ نُنسِهَا نَأْتِ بِخَيْرٍۢ مِّنْهَآ أَوْ مِثْلِهَآ ۗ أَلَمْ تَعْلَمْ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ قَدِيرٌ ١٠٦
if We ever abrogate1 a verse or cause it to be forgotten, We replace it with a better or similar one. Do you not know that Allah is Most Capable of everything?
Commentary:
There are some Ayahs in the quran that were changed by Allh according to his wisdom and change in circumstances, The jews took this as an opportunity to taunt the Muslims tat their religion does not abide by its principles. Allah revelaed that when he changes or removes a verse it is replaces with something equal or better.
