What does the examination consist of
similar to the initial evaluation update medical history oral mucosa inspected for pathological conditions evaluation of restorations, caries, etc analysis of current OH of ax
dentist primary looks for changes that have occurred since last evaluation
What does the treatment consist of
requires scaling and RSD performed based on pocket and plaque chart
care must be taken not to instrument normal sites with shallow sulk (1-3mm deep that do not have calculus) bc studies show sub gingival ealing in root planing in normal periods sites results in significant LOA
What should be done if there is recurrence of periodontal disease
occasionally lesions may recur
reason should be established
can often be traced back to inadequate plaque control on px part or failure to comply w SPT
dentist needs to teach and motivate px OH
What are other causes for recurrence of periodontal disease
inadequate or insufficient tx that has failed to remove all potential factors favoring plaque accumulation
incomplete calculus removal in areas of difficult access
inadequate restorations placed after periodontal tx was completed
failure of px to return for periodic checkup. emphasis need for checkups
presence of systemic disease that may effect host resistance
