Majoritarian electoral systems
A
. Candidates must gain a majority to be elected
. Ensures that one party obtains majority of seats in a legislature
. Tends to give ‘winners bonus’

A
- Voters have two choices
- Candidate wins more than 50% is elected
- Candidat with the most fire and second choices votes in elected

A
. London mayor elections
. 2016 (No candidate won 50% in first round)
In the second round Sadiq khan won 56.8%

Advantages of SV
A
. Encourages moderate campaigning
. Simple system to understand and use
. Reduces tactical voting
. Uses single member constituencies = good MP - constituency links

Disadvantages of SV
A
. Smaller parties not considered = creates two party system
. Voters may need to vote tactically
. Wasted votes to those that get eliminated in first choice
