Bipolar structure
A pattern where there are two opposing forces; in the this case, the USA and USSR as superpowers.
Capitalism
An economic system in which all or most of the means of production and distribution are privately owned.
Conalialism
The system or policy in which a country maintains foreign colonies.
Cultural Imperialism
promoting the culture of one society into another
Dependency theory
Notion that resources flow from a periphery of poor and underdeveloped states into a core of wealthy states
Direct influence
The power of persons or things to affect others by mean of power based on wealth.
Glasnot
Reforms in the USSR - Greater political freedom, such as freedom of speech
Hegemony
Predominant influence exercised by one nation over others
Market economy
An economy in which prices are determined by buyers and sellers with a relatively high degree of freedom
Modernisation Theory
The socio economic development and process that evolves from a traditional society to modern economies E.G. USA
NATO
North Atlantic Treaty Organisation founded in 1949 for the purposes of opposing communism during the Cold War
Perstoika
Reforms in the USSR relaxed economic controls, allowing business to sell their products privately.
USSR
Established in 1922 dissolved in 1991.
World Systems Theory
builds upon dependency theory but counters the periphery/core theory and sees a three tier world.
