A
- Disagreements about size of their relative populations
- Majority of Iraqis are shia, minority sunni
- Sunnis dispute their minority status, do not belive in shia majority

- Shia revolt against Saddam following the Gulf war in 1991
- Govt respondes by brutal repression, (50-100k casulties)

- US outs Saddam, creates power vaccum, disbands military alienating tons of trained men
- US establishes US-led Coalition Provisional Authority, responsible for national security and preparing country for independence
- 2005 - Iraqis vote new consitution, creates Shia pm, sunni speaker of parliament and Kurdish president, leads to sectarian violence
