Allegory
Text that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, usually political or moral
Alliteration
Repetition of the same letter or sound at the beginning of words close or next to each other
Allusion
Text that references a well known place, event, or literary work
Ambiguity
Text that is open to multiple interpretations
Anachronism
The text has an error in chronology; something is out of time and out of place
Analogy
Creating a relationship between two unlike things by finding similarities; conveys an idea through comparison
Anaphora
Repetition of the first part of a sentence for effect
Antagonist
A character who stands in opposition to the protagonist or main character
Antihero
Protagonist or main character in a story who lacks stereotypical hero attributes
Antithesis
Puts two contrasting ideas together to emphasize the difference
Aphorism
A statement of truth or opinion expressed in a concise or witty manner
Apostrophe
When a writer or speaker detaches himself from reality and addresses an imaginary character in a speech
Archetype
A typical character, action, or situation that seems to represent a pattern of human nature
Aside
Term used in theatre; when a characters dialogue is spoken but not heard by other characters
Assonance
Repetition of a vowel or dip-thong in non rhyming words
