A comparison between two similar things; one is usually more familiar than the other

When multiple words repeat the same vowel

Connotation
The feelings associated with a word
Detonation
The exact meaning of a word
Hyperbole
Intense exxageration
Irony
The incongruity between what is expected and what occurs
Metaphor
A comparison between two things without the use of like or as.
Oxymoron
When two contradictory terms are used together
Parody
A spoof or satirical mimicry
Personification
Giving non-humans specifically human attributes
Satire
Witty language often used sarcastically
Simile
A comparison of two things with the use of “like” or “as”
Symbol
When one thing is used to represent something else
Thesis
An explicit statement of a passage’s main point
Understatement
When the writer makes something appear less serious than it is
Diction
The writer’s vocabulary choices
Mood
The atmosphere the writer or speaker creates
Parallel structure
Two or more phrases with a similar structure
Tone
The attitude of the writer
Loose sentence
A sentence whose main idea is stated at the beginning of the sentence
Periodic sentence
A sentence whose main idea is stated at the end of the sentence
Anadiplosis
Ending a phrase of clause with a word that begins the next phrase or clause
Anaphora
Repetition occurring at the beginning of successive phrases or clauses.
Antithesis
A rhetorical device where two contrasting ideas are directly compared in speech
Aphorism
A short, concise statement
Colloquialism
A regional statement, not high English, that drifts into dialect/slang.
Euphemism
A substitution of “nice words” for words that might offend.
