DRAMATIC IRONY
A dramatic device in which the audience hold more information about the plot than the characters on stage
COMIC FORM
A comedic plot usually starts with a problem, includes a mistake or a mistaken identity, and ends with a happy ending and marriage

The Elizabethan belief that a man’s reputation was maintained through his courage, honesty, and the obedience of his wife and daughter(s)

An unpleasant, ill-tempered woman characterised by scolding, nagging, and aggression – a comedic, stock character in Elizabethan drama
WORD PLAY
A language device used by Shakespeare – when a word or phrase can take on multiple meanings for comic effect
CUCKOLDRY
An Elizabethan term – a woman who cheated on her husband would turn him into a ‘cuckold’ – a foolish man with horns on his head (a symbol of his humiliation)
