Three domains when restoring anterior teeth
Emergence profile
The emergence profile really relates to the natural contour of the tooth (its shape) we look at the emergence profile as the changes in angulation of a tooth as it “emerges” from the gingiva, moving towards the incisal edge. The emergence profile must be considered three dimensionally and our restorations must be carefully plan to respect this.
Problems: over contouring of mesial composite on central incisor
Diastema
Problems: under contouring of mesial composite on central incisor
overhang
How would you describe something as being out of line?
not coincident
Interpupillary line
line which the eyes sit on
Occlusal cant
Smile line
The curved line to which the bottom of the teeth sit
Gingival zenith
the most apical aspect of free gingival margin.
What is highlighted in red?
Lobes: the central incisor has therelobes, the middle lobe beingthe largest, tends to bedepressed and leastprominent
What is highlighted in blue?
Developmental grooves: divide the lobes and runparallel to the long axis ofthe tooth
What is shown in white?
Transitional Line angles:
the central and lateral incisors have a mesial and distal transitional line angle which are similar to marginalridges in posterior teeth.
In between transitional line angles, the teeth tend to be flat and at the transitional line angles the tooth curves round and drops into the embrasures.
When should you do shade selection for a composite restoration?
Do this at the beginning, tooth must be wet and in natural light.
Two ways to do shade selection
- Vita shade guide
- Composite buttons
