Q

What formula is used to calculate the oxygen saturation

A

The formula to calculate oxygen SATs is oxyhaemoglobin concentration divided by oxyhaemoglobin concentration plus deoxyhemoglobin concentration x 100

Q

Hi Dr what is the Isobestic point

A

Ok so the isobestic point is the wavelength at which the absorption of deoxyhemoglobin and oxyhaemoglobin is identical

Q

Hi Dr I read it that a pulse oximeter works by omitting to wavelengths of light do you know which wavelengths of light

A

660nm which is red light and 940nm which is infrared light

Q

Hi Dr I have read that if a patient is too cold you may not get an accurate reading on the Pulse oximeter why

A

This is because if you are too cold your blood vessels constrict

Q

Hi Dr I have read that if you have carbon monoxide poisoning this wouldn’t be detected as low oxygen SATs on a pulse oximeter why

A

Carboxyhemoglobin has the same absorption spectrum at 6 690 as oxy haemoglobin so the oxygen that will detect it’s as if it was oxygen

Q

Hi Dr I have heard that there is another way to identify if a patient has low blood pressure other than using the systolic blood pressure reading do you know what it is

A

If there mean arterial pressure falls below 65 mm Mercury

Q

Hi Dr I was carrying out an a to E assessment and got stuck on what to do if the patients GCS score is less than 8. What should you do

A

Ok so got a Glasgow Coma score of less than 8 means they’re not responsive so you need to put them in the recovery position and check their Airways then check blood glucose

Q

Hi Dr how do you calculate the oxygen content of blood in millilitres per 100ml of blood

A

So first you need to calculate the haemoglobin x 1.34 x oxygen SATs ÷ 100

Then you need to add the oxygen concentration in the arteries in kilopascals and X 0.0225

Q

Hi Dr do you know what the Q sofa score actually looks for in a patient

A

B&Q service score looks for alteration in mental status systolic blood pressure of less than or equal to a hundred and the respiratory rate of greater than or equal to 22 beats per minute
