What are the most common life events implicated in suicide in Australia?
Relationship separation,
Relationship conflict,
Financial problems,
Bereavement, and
Family conflict.
What is the most common age group for suicide?
35-55 accounts for 47% of Queenlsand suitcides.
What comprises a suicide risk assessment / formation?
- Assesment of information related to the patients suicidal ideation, planning, behaviours, desires and intent.
- Assessment of information about the patient that is related to their risk and protective factors.
What constitutes a sucide intent?
stated intent + refelcted intent + withheld intent.
Warning signs for suicide include:
- Sense of hopelessness for the future,
- Agressiveness and irritability,
- Negative view of health,
- Frequently talking about health,
- Self-harming behaviour,
- Engaging in risky behaviour,
- Making funeral arrangments / giving away posessions / clothes,
- Substance abuse,
- Feeling like a burden,
- Making suicide threats.
Protective factors for suicide
Support network, religion, previous engagment with MH services, compliance with treatment.
Risk factors can be static, dynamic, unknown and future give examples of each.
Static: male gender, homosexual, history of trauma.
Dynamic: current family conflict etc.
Unknow: drug use.
Future: support person is going away.
