Suggestion Flashcards
What are hetero-suggestions?
Suggestions made by someone else. Not by oneself.
Definition of suggestion
Process of uncritically accepting an idea for belief or action
Suggestions may be given with positive or negative wording.
Positive wordings such as ‘you will’ have greater effect than negative ‘you won’t’ wording.
Suggestions can be commanding or be passive/permissive.
Example: ‘you will…’ And ‘you can…’. The use or benefit depends on the patient- some do not like to be commanded.
What is perhaps the most important rule in making suggestions effective?
Repetition
The subconscious takes everything literally.
Thus suggestions must be in clear and literal wording to be effective.
If some emotion can be aroused in connection with a suggestion, it adds emphasis.
Visual imagery can sometimes be used to stir up some emotion.
In wording any suggestion, put the time for it to be carried out in the future, rather than the present tense.
Even if just by saying, “very soon” or “ in a few minutes”. This allows time for the idea to be absorbed.
It is best not to burden the subconscious with many suggestions.
Two or no more than three is best.
Law of reversed effect
Whenever one is in doubt about something, the harder he tries to accomplish it, the less he is able.
Law of concentrated attention
When spontaneous attention is concentrated on an idea, the subconscious tends to carry it out. And that when the imagination(subconscious) and the will(conscious mind) are in conflict, imagination invariably wins.
Law of dominant effect
An idea always tends towards realization.
The mind always pays attention to the strongest feeling or emotion which is present. Thus, happiness will be chased away by danger.
