Combining vowel needed when
when the suffix begins with a consonant it is necessaty to use the combining vowel (o) to make the word.
Example Cephal + o + dynia =cephalodynia

Combining vowel not needed
when the suffix begins with a vowel the word root attaches to the suffix without the aid of a combining vowel.
Example Cephal + algia
word root + suffix
head pain
meaning - pain in the head
When defining a medical term
Begin the definition by defining the suffix first, the prefix second, and the root(s) last.
