A
Colonel Nassar, the new nationalist leader of Egypt, nationalised the Suez Canal

Why was Eden so keen to react like he did?
A
1) He still saw Britain as a major imperial power
2) He had opposed the appeasement in the 1930s, so kindness was not to be received in this situation
3) He didn’t think that diplomacy would work
4) It was encouraged by France and Israel

A
Israel would invade Egypt and then a British and French army would then invade to intervene in the battle
