Stormwater Management
SUDS are designed to control the quantity of stormwater runoff by decreasing peak flows and reducing runoff volumes and promoting runoff into the ground. this mitigates flooding and erosion in urban areas.
Water Quality Improvement
SUDS are designed to promote better water quality, this could be due to the natural filtration process some of these systems provide pervious pavements for example have granular layers which allow water to flow through and act as a filtration process. SUDS improve the stormwater runoff by removing pollutants, contaminates, this allows protection of water bodies.
Natural Habitat Enhancement
SUDS are designed to allow for biodiversity and provide habitats for wildlife. SUDS in particular such as green roofs & rain gardens both implement vegetation and trees which ensure natural habitats thrive. This supports the urban fauna and flora contributing to urban green initiatives.
