Safely suction via a trache
-Used to clear secretions that can’t be removed by patient by coughing
-Mucus can’t be cleared with cough
-Hear or see secretions
-Difficulty breathing
-Whistling noise from trache tube
-Bleeding
-Bronchospasm
Suction via OP airway (oropharyngeal)
-Stimulates cough to remove excess sputum and aspirate secretions
-At risk of airway obstruction due to relaxed upper airway muscles or blockage
-Pharyngeal obstruction
-Acute pulmonary edema
-Bleeding risk (low platelets)
-Acute face, head, neck injury
Suction via NP airway (nasopharyngeal)
-Use to remove secretions
-Doesn’t stimulate gag reflex
-Can be left in for longer periods
-Same as OPA
Yankaeur suction
-Used when able to clear secretions suction out off mouth
Mechanical insufflation exsufflation
(MI:E)
-Used to stimulate cough and clear secretions
-Undrained pneumothorax
-Severe bronchospasm
-Cardiovascular instability
