Significance
A
- Persistence can inhibit voluntary sucking development and oral sensory stimulation
- less intense/regular during first days of life
- Failure to develop interferes w/nourishment
- slower rate of nutritive sucking may be necessary to coordinate respiration and swallowing

A
- chewable toys/gloved finger, apply pressure to sides of mouth or on tongue (decrease response)
- Change between bottle and chew toy to encourage voluntary suck
