Significance

A
  • Persistence can inhibit voluntary sucking development and oral sensory stimulation
  • less intense/regular during first days of life
  • Failure to develop interferes w/nourishment
  • slower rate of nutritive sucking may be necessary to coordinate respiration and swallowing

  • chewable toys/gloved finger, apply pressure to sides of mouth or on tongue (decrease response)
  • Change between bottle and chew toy to encourage voluntary suck
