Succession and Extinction Flashcards
Ecological succession
is a pattern of change that occurs in an ecosystem after a disturbance.
Disturbances that might cause ecological succession are
things like wildfire, or flood, or clear cutting, or introduction of a non-native species.
There are two types of succession, and both occur after a disturbance.
The first is called primary succession. & second succession
primary succession.
succession that occurs on
surfaces where there is no soil after the disturbance
Secondary succession
is the succession that occurs on surfaces when the soil remains after a disturbance.
major causes of primary succession
is volcanic eruption & glacial movement
Primary succession is going to take longer than secondary succession
because the soil needs to occur, needs to be built up in those areas of bare rock before the rest of the succession can take place.
cause of secondary secession
Human and natural influences both &One of the major causes of secondary succession is wildfires. and Clear-cutting and Introduced species that do not belong to the ecosystem
Will it actually change back to the way it was before?
not always
The first species are called pioneer species
These are the first species to populate an area after a
disturbance.
A climax community
is a stable community that experiences little succession. In this picture, the climax community would be represented
In marine succession, there’s a very well-studied phenomenon called a whale fall community.
A whale fall community occurs when a whale dies and falls to the ocean floor. Think about a whale. It’s a huge animal. All kinds of energy has been vested into that whale to grow
to its size. When it dies, that energy is now available for other species to utilize. Scavengers will come first and feed on the carcass.
What is biodiversity and why is it important?
This is really important, because different species support each other in an ecosystem, and this maintains a healthy ecosystem.
Biodiversity comes in two basic varieties.
species diversity.&s genetic diversity.
genetic diversity
is the changes in the DNA, the different mutations that the different individuals in the species carry. In fact, having lots of genetic diversity encourages the health of species.
