Prisoners of war
Success. In 1920. The league took home half a million of prisoners of war from World War One.
Aaland Islands.
Success. In 1921. Finland and Sweden have a dispute about Aaland Islands and accept the league’s arbitration to give the Aaland Islands to Finland.
Turkey.
Success. In 1922. The league set up camps to feed Turkish refugees.
Austria.
Success. In 1923. Austria was bankrupt. As a result, the League sent over economic experts to help the government.
Bulgaria
Success. In 1925. Greece obeyed the League’s orders to pull out of Bulgaria in 1925.
Slaves
Success. In 1926. The League approved the Slavery convention - altogether, the League freed 200 000 slaves.
Drugs
Success. In 1936, After more than 10 years of work. 26 League nations signed an international convention to combat the drugs trade - a law that is still in force.
Disease.
Success. In 1920. The league worked to prevent malaria and leprosy.
Jobs
Failure. In 1920s. The international Labour Organisation failed to persuade countries to adopt a 48- hour week. - Workers all wanted to work longer, gain more income.
Disarmament.
Failure. In 1923 and 1932. Disarmament talks failed, because Germany demanded as many weapons as everyone else. Other nations weren’t willing to disarm to the level of Germany’s nor allow Germany to rearm to their level.
Corfu.
Failure. In 1923. Mussolini ignored the League’s orders to pull out of Corfu, and made Greece pay money to Italy.
Poland
Failure. In 1921. The poles invaded Vilna (Capital of Lithuania). The league ordered the poles to withdraw. Poland refused and the league could do nothing.
