Succesion Flashcards
Factors affecting succesion (3)
Migration - the arrival of seeds, spores and animals is vital for succesion.
Intraspecific and inerspecific competition operates at all the seral stages of succesion. The succesful outcompeting of one species at one seral stage but not continue into the next.
Facilitation - the positve interaction between species.
What are the two types of facilitation?
Mutalism - an interaction between species that is beneficial to both, e.g. bees and flowers.
Commensalism - an interaction between the species in which one benefits and the other is unaffected, e.g. squirrel and oak trees.
What is primary succesion?
Colonisation of living organisms into an area that has not been colonised before.
What is secondary succesion?
Re-colonisation / reintroduction of organisims into a habitat that was previously occupied by plants and animals, e.g. after an eruption from a volcano.
What is the climax community balanced by?
GPP and total respiration
