Communities change over time by ecological succession.

What is primary succession?
A
Primary succession occurs on barren land, which is first colonised by pioneer species. Over the years, grasses and perennials colonise, followed by small trees and shrubs (scrub), then larger trees until a climax community stabilises on the land.
