subtopic 2.1 / types of materials Flashcards
what is a metallic bond?
metallic bonding occurs between metal atoms of the same or different type.
what is an ionic bond?
ionic bonding occurs between metal and non-metal atoms that have reacted to form ions.
what are chemical bonds?
chemical bonds hold atoms within a molecule together, there are four main types of chemical bonds.
why does ionic bonding occur?
ionic bonding occurs so that both atoms involved in the transfer and gaining of electrons have a full outer shell (electron structure similar to the noble gases, stable octet).
what is covalent bonding?
covalent bonding occurs between two or more non-metal atoms, it involves the non-metal atoms sharing electrons so that they can both have the full outer shell structure of the noble gases.
what is covalent molecular bonding?
involves a small number of atoms in a discrete number of units.
what is covalent continuous bonding?
involves giant lattices or polymers containing millions of repeating units such as diamond, graphite and silicon.
