What is an expository speech?
- a speech meant to be informative
- not to express speaker’s personal opinion
What is an interpretative speech?
- a speech which uses voice, gestures, and facial expressions
- intended to bring to life a text or piece of lit
The oldest/most popular debate in high schools is the TEAM POLICY DEBATE. What are the two sides called?
- Affirmative (Aff): each team has 2 debaters
- Negative (Neg)
What is the Lincoln-Douglass debate format like?
- places more of an emphasis on persuasive speaking
- aff speaker has one more opportunity to talk than opponent

- accent, inflection, intonation, speech-sound quality
- no vocal pauses like “um” or “er”

- emphasize main points
- add humor
What are the principles of the speaker/audience relationship?
- active listening skills
- asking pertinent questions when it is appropriate
- taking notes
- be aware of hostile audience members (respond calmly-audience will typically side with you)
- look for audience body language and respond to it, whether it’s skepticism or already knowing info
If a hostile audience member begins heckling you during a speech, what are 2-3 strategies you could employ?
- acknowledge with slight pause
- respond calmly and tell heckler that questions and comments will be available after
- ask to have them removed
If during a presentation, audience members’ body language and comments show that they already know about the topic, name one thing you could do.
- change course
- allow audience to determine direction of prez
- include new info you hadn’t planned on
