Substitution & Elimination Reagents Flashcards
NaCl
Dissociates into Cl- which is a strong nucleophile
NaBr
Dissociates into Br- which is a strong nucleophile
NaH
The hydride is a strong base that can be used in E2 reactions
DBN and DBU
Strong bases that can be used in E2 reactions
NaOH
Both a strong base and a strong nucleophile so it can be used for SN2 or E2 reactions depending on the substrate. (SN2 for primary, E2 for secondary and tertiary)
NaOR
Both a strong nucleophile and a strong base so it can be used for SN2 and E2 depending on the substrate. ( SN2 for primary and E2 for secondary or tertiary)
t-BuOK
Strong nucleophile and strong base but sterically hindered. This makes it flavor E2 for all levels of substitution. Favors formation of less substituted alkene
NaSH
SH- is a strong nucleophile used in SN2 reactions
H2O
Water is a weak nucleophile and a weak base that can be used in SN1 and E1 reactions. (With heat it will favor E1)
ROH
Alcohols are weak nucleophiles and weak bases used in SN1 and E1. (Heat will favor E1). Can also serve as substrates for SN1/E1 under acidic conditions.
HX
A strong acid that can serve as both an H+ source and a nucleophile as X-
Conc. H2SO4
A strong acid used to convert alcohols into alkenes
