Substances, properties of elements, chemical bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What are properties of metals ?
A
- Shiny
- Very hard or hard
- Malleable
- Ductile
- Good conductor of heat
- Good conductor of electricity
- Solid
- Higher density
2
Q
What are properties of non-metals
A
- Dull
- Brittle
- Non-malleable
- Non-ductile
- Bad conductor of heat
- Bad conductor of electricity
- Solid, liquids, gasses
- Lower density
3
Q
What is chemical bonding?
A
Chemical bonds are invisible forces that hold atoms together. The type of bonding an atom will do depends on how many electrons it has in its outer shell (valence electrons). It involves the redistribution of electrons between atoms, resulting in the formation of chemical bonds, which are attractive forces that hold atoms together.
4
Q
What is Ionic bonding?
A
Ionic bonding:
- Occurs between Metals and non-metals
- Loss and gain or electrons by atoms
- and - ions formed attract each other
- Ionic lattice structure
5
Q
What is covalent bonding?
A
Covalent bonding:
- Occurs between Non-metals
- Share pairs of electrons between atoms
- Small groups of atoms held together
- A molecular structure (forms molecules)
*usually a metalloid and a non-metal bonding together are covalent
