Substance Use Disorders/Drug addiction
Develop when a person’s use of alcohol or another substance such as drugs leads to health issues, disability, and or not adhering to work, school, or home.
Two subcategories of this broad term is substance abuse and substance dependence.
Substance Abuse
Using a drug in a way that is consistent with medical or social norms and despite negative consequences.
Substance Abuse Disorders (SAD)
commmon chronic relapsing illness that are characterized by drug seeking and drug taking behaviors that persist despite negative consequences
Substance Use Disorder Criteria
- Took more extensive amount/extended time
- Repeated efforts to control use or quit
- Full time spent using
- Craving
- DIsregarded major roles
- Social or interpersonal dilemmas
- Missed Activites
- Hazardous use
- Physical or psychological problems
- Tolerance
- Withdrawal
Alcoholic Anonymous (AA)
Founded in 1930. Self-help ground developed the 12-step program model for recovery. Total abstinence is essential and alcoholics need support of others to maintain sobriety
Benzodiazepines
Alcohol withdrawal is usually managed with a benzodiazepine-anxiolytic agent, which is used to suppress the symptoms of abstinence.
Disulfiram (Antabuse)
Prescribed to help deter clients from drinking.
Acamprosate (Campral)
Prescribed for clients recovering from abuse or dependence to help reduce cravings for alcohol and decrease the physical and emotional discomfort that occurs within the first few months of recovery
Methadone
Synthetic opiate, utilized in substitute for heroine in treatment programs.
Levomethadyl
Narcotic analgesic for treatment of opiate dependence.
Naltrexone (ReVia)
Opioid antagonist for treatment of overdose and treatment of alcohol abuse.
