A substance used as medication or in the preparation of medication.
What is the medical definition of a drug?
A substance that causes addiction, habituation, or a marked change in consciousness.
What is addiction?
The compulsive psychological need for and use of a habit-forming substance.
What is habituation?
Tolerance to the effects of a drug, acquired through continued use.
What are dietary supplements?
Ingredients found in food, processed to provide more benefit, such as more vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids
Give an example of an everyday drug.
Nicotine, caffeine, alcohol.
What is caffeine? Where is it often found?
A stimulant of the central nervous system. Found in coffee, chocolate, energy drinks, tea leaves.
Why is caffeine taken?
To increase alertness and fat burning during endurance exercise.
