Nursing interventions and education for clients taking benzodiazepines?
Obtain the clients base line vitals
Monitor VS and neurological status
Provide seizure precautions
Intended effects of benzodiazepines?
Maintenance of the clients VS within normal
Decrease risk of seizures
Decrease intensity of withdrawal manifestations
Examples of benzodiazepines?

Diazepam(valium)
Lorazepam (activan)
What are the medications used for detox?
Benzodiazepines

Disulfiriam
Naltrexone
Acamprosate
What is disulfiram( antabuse)?
Is a daily oral medication that is a type of aversion (behavioral) therapy
What happens when disulfiram is used with alcohol?
Will cause acetaldehyde syndrome to occur
What are the effects of disulfiram and alcohol used concurently ?
Nausea, vomit, weakness, sweating palpatations, and hypotension
What happens when acetaldehyde syndrome occurs?
Progress to respiratory depression, CV depression, seizure, and death
Nursing interventions/ client education for disulfiram ?
- inform of potential dangers of drinking alcohol
- advise to avoid alcohol containing products(cough syrup, mouth wash, aftershave lotion)
- monitor frequent fxn test to detect hepatotoxcicity
- encourage to wear medical alert bracelet
- encourage to participate in a 12 step self-help program
- advise that medication effects persist for two weeks following d/c (acetaldehyde syndrome potential )
Define methadone ( dolophine) substitution
Oral opioid agonist that replaces the opioid to which the client is addicted to. This will prevent abstinence syndrome and remove the need for the pt. to obtain illegal substance. Used for withdrawal and long term maintenance. Dependa ce will be transferred from the opioid to the methadone.
Nursing interventions/ client education on methadone
- must be tapered of slowly for detox.
- encourage 12 step program
- med must be admin from a approved treatment center
