(Dorsal ramus of C1)
Action of Oblique Capitis Inferior
Unilateral: IPSILATERAL head ROTATION
Purposeful activity of Sternocleidomastoid
Watching athletic event, socializing, driving
Origin/Inferior Attachment of Sternocleidomastoid
Clavicular head: Medial 1/3 of clavicle
Sternal head: Manubrium
Insertion/Superior Attachment of Sternocleidomastoid
Mastoid process of temporal bone
Superior nuchal line
Nerve Innervation of Sternocleidomastoid
Spinal accessory nerve (CN XI)
Ventral rami of C3, C4 (for pain + proprioception)
Action of Sternocleidomastoid
Unilaterally:
-Neck IPSILATERAL LATERAL FLEXION
-Neck CONTRALATERAL ROTATION
Bilaterally:
-Neck EXTENSION at OA joints
-Cervical vertebrae FLEXION
-Superior vertebrae EXTENSION with inferior vertebrae FLEXION (head is same level, chin goes forward)
When cervical vertebrae fixed:
-Manubrium and medial clavicle ELEVATION
(assists pump-handle action of deep respiration. inhale super deep and you can feel at the top of the breath)
