Sublimation Flashcards
Define sublimation
Evaporation of a solid from a warm surface followed by condensation on a cold surface
Describe the states of matter of sublimation.
Solid to gas to solid
Describe the states of matter of distillation.
Liquid to gas to liquid
Sublimation is a way to…
purify
How far should the centrifuge tube be from the bottom of the flask when performing a sublimation?
About 1 cm
When the centrifuge tube has ice in it during a sublimation, what is it referred to as?
Cold finger
Why can’t we heat a closed system?
It will build up pressure and explode.
What is the purpose of the pipette bulb on the side arm during the sublimation?
To prevent pressure from building too much
Why do we need to put the ice in last while setting up the sublimation?
To prevent condensation of water vapor on the bottom of the cold finger which will contaminate the products
Why should you not collect your crystals from the sublimation inside of your hood?
The crystals are so fine they would be sucked up by the vent and will be unretrievable.
