How to recognize a subject-verb agreement questions?
Most of the subject-verb agreement questions on the SAT deal with verb forms in the third-person singular form (he/she/it/one) and third-person plural forms (they).
Subject-verb agreement questions strategy
Original;
A colony of ants, which are commonly mistaken for communists, has moved into my backyard
1. Cross out all od the non-essential clauses and prepoposition phrases
A colony has moved into my backyard
2. Find the Subject
A colony has moved into my backyard
3. choose the correct form of the verb
The form in question is correct, therefore no change is needed
Common traps in subject-verb agreement questions
1. interruptions (or non-essential info in general)
e.g.
My dog, who’s a real fatty, loves to eat
2. prepositions
e.g.
A colony of ants appeared in my backyard
3. collective nouns
e.g.
a colony appeared in my backyard
(colony is singular. Although there are many ants in it, there’s only one colony)
4. compound subjects
e.g
Jake and Jack are stupid
