being talked about in the sentence

1.b Direct Object
noun that subjects acts upon
ex. I enjoy running.
1.c Subjective Complement
noun that describes/complements the subject
ex. My essential exercise is running.
1.d Object of Preposition
noun follows a preposition
ex. I benefit from running.
1.e Appositive
gives additional info to subject
ex. My exercise, running. takes a lot of effort.
1.f Gerund Phrase
formed by gerund and its object
ex. advocating peace
- Participle
modifies nouns/pronouns
functions as an adjective
2.1 Present Participle
ends in ‘ing’
ex. The cascading waters ruined the village.
2.2 Past Participle
verbs in past participle form
ex. Decayed plants can be fertilizers
2.3 Participial Phrase
consists of participle and modifier(s), object(s) &/complement(s)
ex. Shaking hands, the actress flashes a smile at her fans.

formed by preposition “to” and base form of verb
ex. to donate
functions as a noun/adjective/adverb
