subcortical structures Flashcards
THALAMUS
relays and filters info from the senses and transmits it to the cerebral cortex
How does the thalamus filter info? (2)
By giving more weight to some inputs and less to others
& Closes pathways of incoming sensations during sleep
HYPOTHALAMUS
Regulates body temp, hunger, thirst, and sexual behaviour
What can lesions to the hypothalamus result in?
Overeating or lack of hunger
PITUITARY GLAND
master gland; releases hormones to direct the function of other glands
LIMBIC SYSTEM
a group of forebrain structures (inc amygdala and hippocampus) involved in motivation, emotion, learning and memory
HIPPOCAMPUS
critical for creating new memories and integrating them into a network of knowledge for storage
What can damage to the hippocampus create?
Dysfunctional short term memory
AMYGDALA
Central role in many emotional processes, particularly emotional memory / attaches significance to previously neutral events
BASAL GANGLIA
set of subcritical structures that direct intentional movements
What may happen when the striatum in the basal ganglia is undersupplied with dopamine?
Parkinson’s disease
