What is subacromial bursitis?
Subacromial bursitis is a condition caused by inflammation of the bursa that separates the superior surface of the supraspinatus tendon from the overlying coraco-acromial ligament, acromion, and coracoid and from the deep surface of the deltoid muscle
What is the function of the subacromial bursa?
Helps the motion of the supraspinatus tendon of the rotator cuff in activities such as overhead work
What are symptoms of subacromial bursitis?
Pain along the front and side of the shoulder is the most common symptom and may cause weakness and stiffness
Which clinical tests may indicate subacromial bursitis?
- A painful arc occurs between 60° and 120°
- Speed’s Test –> flexion against resistance, when resistance is removed latent pain starts
- Neer’s Sign: If pain occurs during forward elevation of the internally rotated arm above 90°
How would you treat subacromial bursitis?
Many non-operative treatments have been advocated, including rest; NSAIDs; physical therapy; chiropractic

A small fluid-filled sac lined by synovial membrane which provides a cushion between bones and tendons and/or muscles around a joint
