Sub Topic 3.a. - Bonding Flashcards
What is metallic bonding?
Metallic Bonding is the electrostatic force of attraction between positively charged ions and delocalised outer electrons
Atoms held together in a covalent bond are held together by
electrostatic forces of attraction between positively charged nuclei and negatively charged electrons
The polarity of a covalent bond depends on the
difference in electronegativity between the bonded atoms
Ionic bonding is the
electrostatic force of attraction between positively and negatively charged ions
The type of bonding in a compound is related to
the positions of its constituent elements in the periodic table.
Intramolecular bonds are strong bonds
WITHIN molecules
Intermolecular force are
weak forces of attraction BETWEEN molecules
Metallic bond structure?
Lattice of positive metal ions and a sea of delocalised electrons
Metallic bonding occurs between elements that are
metals
Covalent bonding occurs between
non-metal atoms
A common covalent bond is H2 or O2, these are called
diatomic elements
Pure covalent bond means that the atoms have the
same electronegativity
A polar covalent bond means that the atoms have a different
electronegativity
In a polar covalent bond the electrons are
note equally shared
In a polar covalent bond the atom with the higher electronegativity has a
stronger pull on the shared electrons
