Sub topic 1 Flashcards
Cells
Prokaryotic cell
Any cell that lacks a nucleus and other organelles.
Eukaryotic cell
Any cell or organism that contains a clearly defined nucleus.
What do cells need to survive?
Cells need water, oxygen and food.
Where is the chromosomal DNA found in a prokaryotic cell?
Nucleoid
Photosynthesis occurs in what organelle?
Chloroplast
Expulsion of molecules requiring energy?
Exocytosis
The gelatinous liquid that fills the inside of a cell?
Cytoplasm
What is the purpose of the cell membrane?
Separating the interior of the cell from the outside of the cell.
Cellular respiration occurs where in an animal cell?
Mitochondria
Plant cells can usually be distinguished from animal cells because plant cells only possess:
Cell walls and central vacuoles
What organelle’s role is to breakdown excess cellular material and/or recycle used material in the cell?
Lysosomes
What organelle’s role could be described as the package and process centre for lipids and proteins to be exported out of the cell?
Golgi Apparatus
A ribosome has what function in the cell?
Synthesis of proteins
Where would I expect to find ribosomes in the cell?
In the cytoplasm and attached to the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Explain the endosymbiotic theory of the evolution of eukaryotes:
Two symbiotic organisms become endosymbiotic when one species is taken inside the cytoplasm of another species, resulting in genome fusion.
